Numerous studies have pointed to the immune system in the pathogenesis of retinal disease, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The first International Conference on Inflammation and Retinal Disease will focus on the Complement System, given the powerful human genetic clues that have emerged in the last few years. The approach will be multi-disciplinary and scientifically rigorous, with speakers drawn from the vanguard of complement and immune system biology, and vision science. All speakers will be required to communicate new unpublished data. The conference goal is to provide an environment for debate and the generation of new hypotheses to assist in exploiting the extensive experience in Complement pathobiology for advancing the diagnosis and treatment of AMD.  The 4 day conference should also prove useful for individuals seeking to learn the latest information about complement and inflammation. Ample time will be provided for informal collegial discussions, in a setting renowned for its beauty and history.
