General Information

During your visit in Greece a little chaos may develop, especially in airports, ports, and the busy streets of Athens. Chaos can be a source of intense irritation- alternatively, you could choose to view it as a part of the Mediterranean cultural theater that you have traveled so far to experience. So why not sit back, relax, and enjoy the spectacle while we endeavor to solve any problems as best as we can!

Swimming, jogging, and other sports

In Crete there is a selection of facilities including tennis courts and gym. The Myconian hotel has beach access. In Crete, there are numerous opportunities for golf, sailing, bicycling, horse riding, and jogging.

Taxis

Except during rush hours and rain storms, taxis in Athens are abundant. However, they work in a rather confusing way on the basis of shared fares. If you hire a taxi at a taxi rank, be prepared for the driver to repeatedly slow down to solicit other passengers on the way to your destination. If you want to catch a taxi in the street, then you must shout your destination as they cruise by! With this complex, but safe and often amusing system, you will eventually reach your destination – but not necessarily by the most direct route – and the fare on the meter becomes somewhat academic!

In Crete, the taxi system is quite straightforward with none of the adventures found in Athens.

Telephones, faxes, and business center

A business center will be operative in the Conference Center. Participants will be required to pay for the use of these independent facilities.

Tipping

In restaurants it is usual to tip between 5% to 10% depending on the service and the category of restaurant. For other services, tipping is not considered obligatory.

Weather and dress

Statistics would suggest that at the middle of October, we can expect fine weather in both Athens (16-26oC, 61-76oF) and Crete (18-28oC, 64-82oF). For all outdoor evening events, a light sweater may be useful.
